Students at the Polyvalente Louis-Mailloux Tackle Littering Issue

Encorp recently selected Ms. Tammy Godreau Byram’s class from the high school Polyvalente Louis-Mailloux (Caraquet, NB) as the recipient of one of its Recycling Heroes Community Cleanup Grants for 2021 to reward and encourage their environmental efforts. Throughout the school year, the students had been very concerned with the issue of pollution/littering and been taking concrete actions to counter its effects, such as picking up litter on the school grounds, at the beach, in town, at the outdoor community centre in Caraquet, and at the soccer field. In addition, they set up a recycling program at the school and worked on raising awareness of environmental issues among other youth people at the school by creating videos and posters.

The June 2021 Encorp-sponsored grant allowed them to finish a very successful environmentally focused school year with one last litter cleanup event on June 10 and 11. The students once again got together to pick up litter around the schoolyard and on the beachfront. They found and collected masks, electronic cigarettes, a bicycle wheel, leftover fireworks, take-out waste, recyclable materials, and much more. They also realized that the lack of garbage cans on the school grounds was contributing to the litter problem, and purchased new garbage cans to place around the school – these will be secured with a wood frame so they won’t fly away.  Furthermore, the students even decided to take advantage of the nice weather to plant small trees in the forest at the Caraquet outdoor community centre! What a great idea!

Congratulations to our Recycling Heroes at the Polyvalente Louis-Mailloux.  Your actions will surely inspire others to follow suit!
