Attention redemption centre operators,
Following the increase in deposit refunds that took effect on April 1, 2024, there has been a rise in out-of-province beverage containers being returned to New Brunswick redemption centres (RCs). This is a reminder that you should not accept and refund deposits for out-of-province beverage containers. As outlined in Article 7.10 (f) of your Redemption Centre Service Agreement, RCs are not permitted to accept containers from any person or source if it is known, or reasonably should be known, that the containers originated outside New Brunswick or were acquired through theft or fraud.
For RCs near the Quebec, Nova Scotia, and Maine borders, please be especially cautious with customers you suspect live out-of-province and show up to redeem large numbers of containers. Likewise, Moncton-area RCs may be seeing increased visits from residents from Prince Edward Island. Noticing an out-of-province licence plate indicates that additional vigilance is warranted.
To help educate customers and reduce potential disputes over out-of-province containers, we are sending a poster for display in your RC. All RCs will receive the poster by courier in the coming days.
Thank you for your cooperation.
