Three redemption centres in the Fredericton region implemented a trial run of “Express Bags”. Customers collected their New Brunswick deposit-bearing beverage containers in specially designed bags, and then dropped them off at one of the participating redemption centres, receiving priority service or “skipping the line” for a quick cash payout on the spot. Each “40” Express Bag was designed to hold 40 containers and equal a 2$ cash payout. Thanks to the predetermined cash value, customers who showed up with their Express Bags full of empty beverage containers were given first priority when visiting the redemption centre, since the containers did not need to be counted or sorted in front of them.
This pilot project was launched in May 2015 and the test period ran until May 2017, with approximately 1,000 participants. Response from participating redemption centres was very positive. Some owners were initially reluctant to participate; however, they embraced the Express Bag concept after seeing a reduction of wait times and added efficiencies. Feedback from participants was also very positive.
