Litter Cleanup Event in Apohaqui Gets Residents Involved in Recycling

The very dedicated volunteers from Apohaqui Lower Millstream Recreational Council (Apohaqui, NB) successfully held a community cleanup event at Jones Memorial Park- – a beautiful outdoor recreational area on the banks of the Kennebecasis River and Lower Millstream River – on June 16, 2021, with the support of an Encorp Atlantic Recycling Heroes Community Cleanup Grant.

Approximately 25 individuals took part in the evening’s events. Participants picked up garbage and discarded recyclables, like empty beverage containers, found in the park and on local area roadsides, and dropped off the recyclables at the local redemption centre to ensure these would be recycled. Residents were also encouraged to bring in beverage containers collected at home to the park during the event itself to make sure these would be recycled. Volunteers from Apohaqui Lower Millstream Recreational Council report that proceeds from the recyclables collected during this event totalled $80.40, which will be used towards maintaining recycling containers within Jones Memorial Park.

Volunteers from Apohaqui Lower Millstream Recreational Council also took advantage of this cleanup event to send out a flyer with garbage bags and recycling bags to residents inviting them to do litter cleanups along roads and sidewalks near their houses, and to put these out for collection at curbside. What a great idea and way to encourage civic pride in and respect for the environment in the community!

Great job to the community of Apohaqui! Keep ensuring your beautiful outdoor spaces remain clean and litter-free, and thanks for inspiring other small communities to take the initiative to organize their own litter awareness and cleanup events!
