We Manage the Recycling of Deposit-Bearing Beverage Containers in New Brunswick
Non-alcohol beverage product distributors founded Encorp Atlantic Inc. in 1992 as a response to the New Brunswick Beverage Containers Act, which established a beverage container deposit/redemption program in New Brunswick.
For more than 30 years, Encorp Atlantic Inc. was thus responsible for managing post-consumer beverage containers on behalf of distributors of non-alcoholic beverage products in New Brunswick, recycling over 4.2 billion containers in the process. Post-consumer beverage containers for alcohol beverage products were managed by Alcool NB Liquor (ANBL), and brewers managed post-consumer refillable beer bottles.
In 2023, it was announced that the New Brunswick Beverage Containers Program under the Beverage Containers Act would be transitioning to a new Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program model in April 2024. The new EPR program for beverage container management would be governed by the Designated Materials Regulation (Clean Environment Act) – which would be amended to include beverage containers. All EPR programs in New Brunswick falling under this Regulation are operated/managed by producer responsibility organizations (PROs) and overseen by Recycle NB.
In anticipation of the new program, on April 1, 2023, Encorp Atlantic Inc. transferred its operations to a new not-for-profit, Encorp Atlantic / Atlantique. Better known simply as “Encorp”, this new PRO would become responsible for managing all deposit-bearing beverage containers in the province of New Brunswick by submitting and seeking approval of a Stewardship Plan for the management of the Beverage Containers Program to Recycle NB and reporting back on progress via annual reports. All beverage industry product brand owners who sell or distribute deposit-bearing beverage products in New Brunswick would thus be able to appoint Encorp as their designated agent/PRO for the management of their post-consumer containers in the province.
This structure change and expansion of mandate for Encorp are the results of numerous consultations over the past years with all stakeholders regarding the future of the Beverage Containers Program and aim to increase industry cooperation to make significant positive improvements to the Program.
Since April 1, 2024, Encorp, as the official PRO managing the EPR Beverage Containers Program in New Brunswick, represents over 300 beverage product brand owners who sell/distribute deposit-bearing beverage products in the province of New Brunswick. Encorp ensures these brand owners’ post-consumer beverage containers are recovered and reused or recycled.
