Full Refunds and Convenience: New Beverage Container Redemption Centre Opens in Rogersville

MONCTON, NBSEPTEMBER 12, 2024 – Encorp Atlantic/Encorp Atlantique (“Encorp”) is excited to announce the opening of a new beverage container redemption centre at the Rogersville Co-op. This new facility will provide residents of the village of Rogersville and surrounding areas (now known as “Nouvelle-Arcadie”) with a convenient location to recycle empty deposit-bearing beverage containers.

Located at the back of the Rogersville Co-op (28 Boucher Street), where local area residents shop and purchase beverages, this new facility – “Centre de recyclage COOP” –adds convenience to their routine. They can easily return their empty beverage containers during regular grocery runs, making recycling more accessible than ever.

In addition to the convenience of this new location, residents will also benefit from recent changes to the New Brunswick Beverage Containers Program. As of April 1, 2024, consumers now receive full refunds on beverage container deposits, an increase from the previous half-refund that had been in place for over 30 years. This is excellent news, as many had been storing their containers in anticipation of a new redemption centre after collection and recycling services were halted earlier this spring due to the closure of the previous facility in the area.

Encorp, a non-profit producer responsibility organization based in Moncton, has been managing the Beverage Containers Program on behalf of the beverage industry since April 1, 2024, when the program transitioned to an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) model. In response to the need for a new solution in Nouvelle-Arcadie, Encorp consulted with community leaders throughout the spring and summer and issued an RFP to invite proposals from local businesses.

“We are pleased to have partnered with the Rogersville Co-op to bring this much-needed service back to the community,” said Encorp CEO Pierre Landry. “The opening of this new redemption centre at a high-traffic retail location such as the Rogersville Co-op aligns with our goal of increasing access and convenience to used beverage container recycling for New Brunswickers.”

Management from the Rogersville Co-op also expressed their excitement about being able to offer this recycling service to their community. “It’s a service that was missing but very essential, and it complements other services offered by the Cooperative, thanks to our partnership with Encorp Atlantic,” adds President Fernand Gaudet. “Recycling in all its forms must be part of our daily efforts.”

“Recycle NB is pleased that Encorp Atlantic is continuing to expand its network of redemption centres in the province,” said CEO Timothy LeBlanc. “Making it easy and convenient for New Brunswickers to recycle their deposit-bearing beverage containers will ultimately lead to increased recycling rates, keeping these recyclables out of our landfills, roadways and outdoor spaces.”

The new redemption centre, “Centre de recyclage COOP,” will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesdays to Saturdays. It opened its doors on Thursday, September 12, 2024.
