Deposits and Refunds

You pay a deposit on beverage containers when you purchase them at the store so that you are enticed to bring the empty containers back to claim your refund and also to help pay for the recycling costs. There is no additional tax on the deposit.


REFILLABLE CONTAINERS – 100% REFUND

When you return refillable glass bottles to a redemption centre, you get a full refund on each bottle.

  • Beer bottles: $1.20 deposit per dozen, $1.20 refund per dozen.

RECYCLABLE CONTAINERS – 50% REFUND

When you return recyclable containers (plastic bottles, metal cans, drinking boxes, plastic pouches, carton) to a redemption centre, you get a 50% refund. The unrefunded portion of each deposit is used to recover the costs of administering the program for the recycling of the containers. A portion is also deposited into New Brunswick’s Environmental Trust Fund, which is used to promote recycling activities and improve the state of the environment in the province.

  • All non-alcoholic (ready-to-drink) beverage containers – all sizes: 10 ¢ deposit, 5 ¢ refund
  • Alcoholic beverage containers under 500 ml: 10¢ deposit, 5¢ refund
  • Alcoholic beverage containers over 500 ml: 20¢ deposit, 10¢ refund
